English: A Royal Air Force Avro Lancaster I (s/n NG128, coded “SR-B”) of No. 101 Sqn out of Ludford Magna and flown by Fg Off R.B. Tibbs as part of a thousand-bomber raid, dropping its load over Duisburg, Germany, on 14-15 October 1944. Note the large aerials on top of the Lancaster´s fuselage, indicating that the aircraft is carrying ‘Airborne Cigar’ (ABC), a jamming device which disrupted enemy radio telephone channels. Over 2,000 sorties were dispatched to the city of Duisburg during 14-15 October 1944, in order to to demonstrate the RAF Bomber Command’s overwhelming superiority in German skies (“Operation Hurricane”).

A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber flying over Monte Cassino, 15 February 1944, during the battle of the same name.

The cloud of smoke used to be the medieval St. Benedict of Nursia abbey perched on top of the hill, destroyed during a two-day long massive bombing and artillery raid after the allies incorrectly assumed it was being used by the Germans as an artillery spotting position, resulting in over 200 Italian civilian deaths, including many monks, and even some friendly fire casualties after some of the notoriously inaccurate bombs released by american aircraft actually hit nearby allied positions by accident.

Ultimately the destruction of the abbey gave the Germans a perfect defensive position over the hill, when a paratrooper division, the 1. Fallschirm-Jäger-Division, took control over the ruins and used them to great effect in repulsing subsequent infantry assaults for months, ultimately delaying the allied advance over Rome.

Around this time of the year we get windy mornings and afternoons, and overall cool days, around 20-25°c, so the weather it’s quite nice actually.

Mount Everest, crashed Mil Mi-17 helicopters scattered close to the south base camp.

do they usually crash because of weather or do they crash because of the thin air and literally can’t fly?

Both actually, thin air makes maneuvering extremely difficult, and we you factor strong winds, they just go down like flies.

Plus, they’re usually flow at their limits of their capacity, since there’s a lot of money behind getting equipment into Everest, making an already precarious situation even worse, factor in the little oversight from the Nepalese government, and you have yourself a graveyard for helicopters.
